EVAPORATION LOSS OF LUBRICANTS OILS & GREASES – ASTM 972 / ASTM D 2878 / IP 183

This test method covers the determination of the loss in mass by evaporation of lubricating greases and oils for applications where evaporation loss is a factor. Evaporation loss data can be obtained at any temperature between 100 to 150OC. The weighed sample of lubricant in an evaporation cell is placed in a bath maintained at the desired test temperature. Heated air is passed over its surface for 22 hours. The evaporation loss is calculated from the loss in mass of the sample.

APPARATUS CONSIST OF :

Constant temp. bath	The constant temperature liquid bath, mfg SS / MS or Aluminium block.
Evaporation test cells	SS body with provision for air injection tube.
Flow metering assembly	Rotameter, delivery Tubes, control valve, etc.
Supporting devices	Supporting devices, clamps hoods, etc.
Control panel	Digital temperature indicator cum controller, six digit display.
Recommended spares	ASTM 12 C Thermometer. Set test cells / test tubes, etc.
